Digital Borrowing

What's Digital Borrowing?
Digital borrowing refers to borrowing an ebook or an e-audiobook through an online portal and using it on a digital device.  An ebook is a digital, onscreen version of a published book, which is mostly text but can sometimes have sound and links to resources embedded in them.  An e-audiobook is the digital version of a book on CD, so you can listen to a spoken word book being read to you through your computer or portable digital device.  Digital audio and ebooks provide another great way to learn & enjoy reading!

What do I need to borrow a digital book?
To allow students & staff to borrow ebooks or e-audiobooks, Halton District School Board has partnered with OverDrive Inc., an online platform that allows it's users to borrow and download digital books 24/7.

To borrow a digital book, you need;
  •  your own computer or mobile device that has an Internet connection, like an iPad, tablet, or phone
  •  your school library barcode which is available from the school librarian if you don't already have it
  •  and some free software from OverDrive
Where do I access OverDrive?
For students, you can access OverDrive by going here and clicking on the tab that says "Search for E-Resources", then clicking on OverDrive under the Book Resources heading.  Here you will find age appropriate and curriculum related titles.

For staff, you can access OverDrive by logging into MyHDSB and selecting the Library Apps icon from the tray at the bottom of the screen, then clicking on the OverDrive icon.  Here you will find all titles in the HDSB OverDrive catalogue.

Alternatively, you can access the complete HDSB audio & ebook collection directly at http://hdsb.lib.overdrive.com.

How do I use OverDrive?
1.  Navigate to the OverDrive site.

2.  Browse for a book you want to read, and check it out using your school library barcode.

3.  Download the title to your computer or mobile device.  Certain titles are available to read online in your browser (Internet Explorer generally does not allow this feature).

4.  Enjoy your book by listening or reading offline without the worry of overdue notices!

How many books can I borrow?
Staff & students may each borrow 10 eBooks or e-audiobooks from OverDrive.  This is in addition to the books & resources you may borrow from the school library.  You may have 3 titles on hold at a time.

What can I find in my account?
To manage your digital reading, you can click on the Account icon.  This is will take you to your account page, where you can see what books you have checked out, the status of any holds you may have placed on digital books you want to borrow, when your books are due and lists of books that you have placed on your wishlist, rated, are recommended for you based on your previous checkouts, and that you have recommended to others.

What software do I need to read my digital books?
